“Let them Revolt”, Nabil Nayal, AW19

Planning and getting organised

We’re back from the Christmas Break! We had our first workshop yesterday, and it was so good to meet more of the group – I am looking forward to working with them this term. We were asked to share a short (5 minute) presentation with the group. My presentation covered my background, what I have done in industry, my practice-based PhD and how the concepts and theoretical frameworks developed during the PhD have informed my teaching practice. I was pleased with the presentation and it was received well by my peers and my tutor. It was interesting to learn that one of the strengths of my presentation was the fact that there were few words and lots of images. This was particularly useful for those who are dyslexic and struggle to read lots of text when the presenter is talking. I was also pleased to have delivered the presentation within the 5 minute limit, and I think this is (in part) owed to the use of images rather than words, which meant that I was not tempted to read off the slides and avoid the temptation to ensure I covered everything! I was pleased that my slide on my PhD thesis drew interest from my peers. One person commented that my approach of seeing image as word and word as image was useful (see image of slide). I think one thing I want to work on is the speed at which I speak. I tend to speak quickly, and I worry that people can’t always understand what I am saying/what I am trying to communicate. One method I have employed in the past is to put a sticky note on my screen that says “slow down”, which reminds me to watch my speed as I am talking. I might try this again and ask fellow classmates if they have any tips to help counteract the racing-driver within me!

A ‘zoomed-out’ view of my PhD thesis (without appendices), allowing me the chance to ‘see’ my work from another perspective.
